What would you say if I told you that the trials and tribulations, the toxic relationships, and the other “bad” things that happened to you in your life happened and will happen because you signed up for it?
I’m betting some of you will be very triggered by this concept.
This concept has been called a soul contract, a sacred contract, a pre-birth agreement, and a sacred pre-birth plan.
The first time I heard about sou contracts was a teenager exploring the New Age section at our new Barnes & Noble store. And then I heard it again when I saw Beyond with James Van Praagh (JVP) on tv in the early 2000s.
What is it?
JVP describes it as the blueprint that you will follow through lifetime, including your parents, the place you are born, the destiny points you will encounter, and the lessons you will learn.
A soul contract is based on the truth that you are a spiritual being having a human experience. The reason you are having a human experience is to further your spiritual growth, and Earth is the school on which you are here to learn.
Before you are born, you, your guides, and other souls are putting together your curriculum for Earth school. The lessons you want to learn, how you want to learn them, and who you will learn them from.
You will also be a teacher to others.
How does it work?
I imagine this as a group of spirits gathered with their white board (because I love white boards) to plan out your life.
To illustrate, I’m going to use a couple of my real-life situations.
I imagine that before I was born, in the great spirit strategy session, I said, “I want to learn forgiveness and I want to learn this by forgiving someone who would otherwise be unforgivable. Who is up for teaching me this?”
“I will!” says a spirit that would later become my rapist.
That spirit and I then work together to come to an agreement about the what and the how it will happen.
I also say, “I am looking for someone to help me learn the lesson of being worthy. And I’d like this to be deeper than last time. So perhaps it can be something that I can’t do that others can do that I have no control over. I think I would need someone to help me long-term.”
Said the spirits that would become my parents.
“Great! That will also help me with the lessons of forgiveness and self-love, too.” I respond enthusiastically.
“I can support you, too! I really enjoyed working with you last time around!” said the spirit that would later become my second husband who walked the journey of infertility with me and taught me that I’m worthy of love just as I am.
“I also want to fulfill my purpose this time because I didn’t last time. Can anyone help push me if I’m not on the right track by a certain point?” I ask.
“I’ll do it. You were my grandmother last time, so maybe I can be your grandmother this time.” Replied the spirit that would later become my grandmother who sparked my spiritual awakening with her regrets and death.
And so, we all worked together to determine who would be related or connected to whom, what the dynamics would be, and planned a few specifics…but not too many because free will and all.
Disempowering or Empowering?
How does this concept make you feel?
Based on real life conversations I’ve had; I know there are usually mixed responses.
Perhaps because some people prefer to think that life happens to them. Perhaps some people prefer to play the victim role because it serves them in one way or another. Or perhaps some people don’t want to believe that they would ever sign up for some of the dark, heavy, and sometimes pure evil things that happen in this life.
I believe we signed up for this Earth school to experience the contrast in the human experience. As I shared in my blog post The Point of Life last year, “This is the point. To feel the depths of what being human is all about is the point. To experience every moment of the journey as it happens. Not just the end. Not just the beginning. Not just the highs or the lows. But this and every moment as it happens.”
I personally find great empowerment in the soul contract. It enables me to reflect on the situation, person, or event and look for the lesson and the deeper meaning that I wanted to experience.
Does that mean I’ll always get it? Not necessarily. But it helps me be more open to the possibilities.
Stay curious, my friends!
